Mexican Man Killed After ICE Mistakenly Targets Wrong Vehicle in Houston
US officials say that Lorenzo Salgado Araujo, a 52-year-old man and Mexican national who died after being killed by an ICE agent during a traffic stop in Houston on Tuesday, was not the subject of the operation in which he was killed. According to the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), ICE agents had mistaken his white van and physical appearance for the target of the operation, claiming that the officer had fired in self-defense when Salgado had allegedly crashed an ICE vehicle as he tried to avoid arrest. Salgado's family said he was an undocumented construction worker without any criminal record who was about to get a work permit. This case has resulted in local protests and demands for an independent probe from four members of Congress because the agents did not wear body cameras. Due to such incidents and others like them, the Mexican government is filing criminal complaints against the US to look into the deaths of over a dozen Mexican nationals in ICE custody.
